Iron-reducing acidophile. Acidiphilium cryptum was first isolated from a supposedly pure culture of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans. This organism, a heterotrophic acidophile, has been isolated from acid mine drainage, hydrothermal vent water, and other acidic mineral environments.
