Host Lineage: Aliivibrio salmonicida; Aliivibrio; Vibrionaceae; Vibrionales; Proteobacteria; Bacteria
General Information: The fish pathogen Aliivibrio salmonicida, formerly Vibrio salmonicida, a halophilic and psychrophilic bacterium, is the causative agent of Hitra disease, also called cold water vibriosis, in Atlantic salmon and sea farmed rainbow trout in marine aquaculture. This disease, a generalized infection of the blood, occurs primarily in late autumn, winter, or early spring when water temperatures are below 15 degrees C. The Gram-negative bacterium causes tissue degradation, hemolysis and sepsis in vivo.
